What would happen if I put grass seeds in water?

What would happen if I just put a few grass seeds in water with a little dirt at the bottom of the peti dish. If you are wondering why I am asking it is because I go to an online School and my mom would rather me not do this lab because we don't have the materials. Also how long does it take fro grass seeds to start growing like the first site of green?

1. Too much water will only drown them, they'll get water soaked and rot!
2. it will grow, you'll see them come up in 3 to 5 days
3. Most grass seed would rot. Although they need moisture, too much constant moisture is counterproductive. Seeds need air too, some need light to germinate, some only germinate in complete darkness. If you do it right you should be seeing signs of green in about a week.
