What impact could fertilizer have on the Nitrogen Cycle?

I need some help with this question for my Earth Science homework. Here it is: When fertilizers are applied to fields, some of the fertilizer can be washed off by rain water and join surface run-off into a nearby stream or lake. What impact could fertilizer have on the Nitrogen Cycle? also, what impact could this have on the algae in lakes?
