- I live in the southeast too and the grass we planted grew quickly in out sandy soil...I can't remember the name of it but I will be sure to come back and put it down once I ask my mom. Maybe you could post this in like a gardening or plant section of some sort and they can give you a type of grass that is safe for horses that grows fast in the southeast. Good Luck and I will be back to put the name on here :)
- Southern States offers a variety of mixed pasture seed. Combos like orchard grass, timothy, fescue, and bluegrass. I believe the orchard grass is the easiest to grow, but you want a variety of grasses. You don't want to use chemical fertilizers on pasture grass, so don't buy any of that encapsulated "quick" grass.
- There is a lot of good choices, I know the Midwest better but I'd recommend a grass like Kentucky bluegrass, or tall fescue, if you don't care about a grass that won't die almost no matter what you do reed canary is a good choice in some area's, this link has some good tables, I've been working with it right now as I'm working on reseeding as well http://cropsoil.psu.edu/extension/facts/agfacts32.cfm That also gives basic info about how to start your grass
- check with your rural roads department, they usually have a good fast growing grass mix for ditches.you can also check with your local agricultural office, they will have a good recomendation on what grass would be best for your pasture in your area.
- best bet to find the best for your place is to call your local ag extention, they'll have more then enough answers and choices for you. i dont live in the southeast so i couldnt even think to recommand any of the ones i've heard of. good luck.
