How long does it take to notice a difference after fertilizing a lawn?

  1. Much depends on the type and method of fertilization. A dry granular fertilizer needs to be watered in before the roots of the lawn can take up the nutrients. A liquid fertilizer also needs to be watered in, but since it is already dissolved, you should see a difference quicker. A noticeable difference also depends on how long it has been since the lawn was last fertilized. A lawn that has been seriously depleted of nutrients, will show a more noticeable and dramatic improvement within a couple of days after the fertilizer has been watered in. A lawn that gets regular fertilization, and is in overall good condition, will not show much in the way of improvement because you are just maintaining what is already in good shape. Good, bad, or indifferent, your lawn should show some kind of response in just a few days after your application of fertilizer. There are a lot of different lawn fertilizer mixes on the market. All of them contain some measure of nitrogen. Nitrogen has the quickest effect on the lawn. It will "green it up" very quickly, and cause the grass to grow quickly. It is also the first nutrient that is depleted in the soil. The application of a nitrogen rich fertilizer in the Spring often means cutting the lawn twice a week considering the fact that this is the time of year that grass naturally grows the fastest. Good luck with your lawn this year.
