  1. I wish I could help you, but you don't let us answerers know what part of the country you live in, so there's no way to answer your question. If you want to re-submit it with the pertinent information, you can get a correct answer.
  2. I am in PA and Penn State mix is the best to get. I believe it has a lot of Kentucky Blue grass along with some perennial rye grass for filling in those dry patches. You should visit a local garden/feed store in your area and they could tell you whats best for your area.
  3. well, that all depends. making your lawn look lush and green is no easy task. there is grass seed for sunny areas and for shady areas. get the seed that will grow in the areas that are thin. you'll need to keep the seed well watered for several weeks for the grass to get established.
  4. Contractor's mix is the best for all types of soils, but will not be ALL grass. Contractor's mix will contain some meadow grasses as well as some weeds which allow for greening of tough areas In the early spring, you may want to remove the grass that is there and dig down about 1 inch or so. Then bring in some enriched topsoil, spread the seeds and cover with hay to prevent blowing or washing away of the seeds as well as limits how much seeds the birds will get. The hay can be left to rot or even mulched after the grass starts growing as it will turn to fertilizer ^Just a thought on the last paragraph^
  5. Just to add to Jeffrey f's suggestion. Keep the straw moist and you could also use sphagnum peat for this purpose.
