The Grass Doctor

How can I keep our lawn green after our dog's urine creates so many brown patches?

We have a mix between an Austrialian Shepherd and a Poodle and there are quite a few brown spots and patches where he goes #1 on the lawn....is there any way we can restore this to its green color and how can we prevent it in the future?

  1. umm use fertilizer and water the grass alot =]
  2. That's related to the pH of his urine, which is related to his diet. What are you feeding him?
  3. Have your dog piss in the neighbors yard. That's what my neighbor does to me.
  4. Well.. that is the reason why I have a lawn(back yard) because I want the doggies have a place to go that they like. The only thing you can do is to water it a lot and the water leaches the urine down
  5. I wondered where those brown spots were coming from. Thanks!
  6. We found that watering down the spots right after our dogs peed helped. Leave a watering can full of water on the porch or somewhere close by.
  7. The reason for the spot is the urine has a high nitrogen content. With adequate water the spot is actually greener than the rest of the lawn, but without a lot of extra water it acts like a fertilizer burn. There is a product you can buy at Petco or Petsmart that you can put on the spots that will help, but not sure how effective it is.
  8. There's some kind of fertilizer to buy from the petstore...go to petsmart.com and search for lawn care. there's about 7 different kinds.
  9. Paper train the dog and then use fertilizer on your drass and different grass growin sprays.
  10. have your dog's trained to go in one place dogs can be trained to go say in the corner or get rid of them
  11. If you have any rocks or gravel try to get your dog to use the bathroom there. Then water your grass once in the morning and once at night but not when it's too sunny because your grass might burn. Good Luck !!!
  12. do you have a female dog? it is the urine of the female dog that burns the grass. Your vet can help with safe additives for the dogs drinking water. Unfortunately the roots of the grass have been burnt so time is needed for lawn to regenerate, however there are many types of fertiliser speak to your local nursery for advice on the right one to use.
  13. I would designate a certain area for your dogs to go to the bathroom. like an area way in the back corner of your yard. This will limit how many brown spots you have in your yard .
