The Grass Doctor

Scott's family grass seed sells for $2.45 per lb and scotts spot filter grass seed sells for $2.10 per lb.

How many pounds of each should be mixed to get a 10 pound mixture that sells for $2.20 per pound?

  1. 2.45x + (10-x)2.10 = 22 2.45x + 21 -2.1x = 22 0.35x = 1 x = (1/0.35) = 2.86 lbs So, 2.86 pounds of the $2.45 grass seed should be mixed with 7.14 pounds of the $2.10 grass seed to yield 10 pounds of $2.20 grass seed
  2. x = amount at $2.45 10 - x = amount at $2.10 2.45x + 2.1(10-x) = 10(2.2) 2.45x + 21- 2.1x =22 .35x = 1 x = 1/.35 = 2.86 pounds of $2..45 FILLER 10-X = 7.14 POUNDS OF $ 2.10 filler
  3. 7 and a seventh of the cheap stuff 2 and six sevenths of the other seed. These other answers are off by .001 but they still work. You just have to think the cheap stuff is only 10 cents a pound off what I want and every pound I replace with the other stuff will make the price go up 35 cents. 35 x 2 6/7 is $1 difference.(ten cents x ten pounds)
