The Grass Doctor

When should a lawn care service start their yearly program (Chicago area)?

My lawn care provider put down their early spring starter this afternoon and now it is snowing. Shouldn't they wait until Aprial?

  1. As soon as grass needs to be cut in your area, or when you call them and ask them to get started early.
  2. Seems kind of early, even for Chicago. I always thought that the feeding of lawns should be on the holidays: Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and Halloween being the last feeding. Your lawn shouldn't be cut until it is at least 3 inches high otherwise there is too much stress on the blades. Check with you local extension office. They should know the specifics for your area.
