The Grass Doctor

Is this a good time of year to add new grass seeds to my lawn?

It getting cool here, about 61F (16C) to 40F (10C) degrees. Or should I wait until spring ?

  1. I would wait until spring so the grass has a longer time to grow a strong root system before winter comes
  2. I've heard that this is a good time to plant grass seed. In fact, some landscape people like to sow seed just before a snow so the the melting snow takes the seed down into the ground.
  3. If you live in zone 7 or south you can plant winter grasses. These are cool season grasses that grow through the winter, and die out with warm weather in late spring. Otherwise you should wait till spring to reseed your lawn.
  4. The usual time is April or September,
  5. Yes, Grass grows best when it's cool in the spring and fall.
  6. Around here (Ohio Valley) it's a bit late to get a good start. However, you can "winter seed" in later winter. The snow, heaving and thawing will do most of the work for you and it will sprout in spring when it warms up enough. (This is the way natural seeding works).
  7. You can do rye grass at this time of year. Bermuda needs to be seeded between May 15th and September 1st (at least in East Texas).
