The Grass Doctor

Do tomato plants have iron naturally without fertilizer?

I'm doing a science fair project and answers are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  1. Only if there is iron in the soil. Most soils have iron in it...as well as magnesium, calcium, etc....
  2. I grow two hundred tomato plants every year without ever using fertilizer. I do however, mulch, and roto-til over two thousand pounds of leaf matter, grass clippings, and other organic matter into the soil every fall and spring. I don’t know what the iron content is, but my entire neighborhood will tell you they’re the best tomatoes around. I live on Long Island, which means that my soil is pure sand. The addition of all that mulch makes my soil sandy loam.
