- Depends on climate.....there are 3 most common seeds in the US HERE'S THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT TIPS 1) never buy a mix because you'll have clumps of different grasses and this will look like weeds 2) always grow to 3 1/2" and cut to three inches so grass can grow properly TYPES First and most common is kentucky bluegrass its a fine leaf that grows tall and seeds in the spring ,in the spring wait for the seeds then mulch..to thicken your lawn afterall the best defense against weeds is a thick lawn 2nd is tall fescue this plant has wider leafs and is coarse very hearty and grows well in all climates 3rd is rye rye grass is wide leaf too and grows more tubular and branches from one stalk......none of these are golf coarse grasses by the way....once it's established always treat..... twice a year for insects like grubs, sod web worms and chinchbugs spring.&.late summer use lime ,calcium magnisium (i.e lightly-icemelt commonly used for sidewalks) or gypsum each spring to balance PH ironite is great for color and aerate in the fall, fertilize once a season and you'll have the best lawn in your neighborhood
