When is the best time of year to plant grass seed?

I live in Buffalo NY which means in the winter it is very cold and snows almost everyday and in summer it gets very hot

  1. spring?
  2. Probably late april
  3. You'll need to plant your seed during that short window of time between the last frost and the first really hot weather. This will give the grass enough time to become established before the summer heat starts. Remember to give your new grass plenty of water through the hot weather especially the first year. I'm assuming you're planting bluegrass which loves Northern climates. You definitely need what is called a cool season grass.
  4. the autumn is the best time , the grass can grow to a reasonable height before the onset of winter so when the spring comes along it's already got a head start, if you plant in the spring the new grass can be scorched and slow the growth
  5. i reseed in the fall after the leaves have fallen and i have picked them up
  6. Because you live in the northern areas of the United states, fall is generally the best grass growing and maintenance season. Of course, you can start working on your lawn in spring, after the snows melt, however, spring lawn care means that new grass does not get a change to strengthen in its usual winter dormant stage. Also consider which types of grass you might want to use. Buffalo is cool season grass country, and, "There are many different commercial brands of cool season grasses such as bluegrass, ryegrass and fescue. Each type of cool season grass is suited to different conditions. For example, ryegrass is better suited than bluegrass for high traffic areas because it puts down better roots. Many lawns, and most of the best kept natural turf athletic fields, use a combination of ryegrass and bluegrass."
