The Grass Doctor

What Fertilizer to use on my bermuda grass in the DFW Area?

Ok this is my 1st house and i grew up in New Mexico and i never had a grass front yard. So now that spring is coming up. What type of Fertilizer should i use for my grass, I mainly want to keep out the weeds. I probably won't be watering it much since water is so damn expensive here. So keeping it green isn't a high priority, besides its bermuda anyway and that grass in my opinion is horrible anyway. So any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  1. I would use ammonia sulfate. And a healthy bermuda lawn will choke out weeds on it's own.
  2. My lawn is bermuda...I'm in Plano. I use fertilizer that I get at Home Depot. Most of the Scott's products are good. If you keep it fertilized, watered and mowed, the bermuda will choke out the weeds. Use the Weed-and-Feed stuff. My lawn is lush and weed free. I fertilize about every 6 weeks and mow at least once a week. If you have a sprinkler system, run it once or twice a week for 20 minutes a station. That will give it plenty of water.
  3. there will be three numbers on the package of fertilizer X-X-X In the Spring go with the numbers being the same or the first number being a little higher.. towards the end of Summer go with the numbers the same or the middle number a bit higher. Probably don't need a weed n feed type product for a strong growing turf grass will keep the weeds down in numbers. If you are in the H-E-B part of the metroplex you may want to get a soil analysis (wouldn't hurt where ever you are actually)..that red sand area can fluctuate with the nutrients found from block to block
