  1. For young plants/trees: http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/avocado.html (lots of good information on this link) "Fertilization: Commence feeding of young trees after one year of growth, using a balanced fertilizer, four times yearly. Older trees benefit from feeding with nitrogenous fertilizer applied in late winter and early summer. Yellowed leaves (chlorosis) indicate iron deficiency. This can usually be corrected by a chelated foliar spray of trace elements containing iron. Mature trees often also show a zinc deficiency." (check with a nursery clerk for a balanced fertilizer). For grown trees: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Trees-739/Avocado-Tree-CA.htm "Nitrogen and potassium are necessary to produce large high quality fruit. A 10-5-20 fertilizer is generally used after trees begin to bear fruit to provide the needed nitrogen and potassium. 3 or 4 applications per year at a rate of 4-5 lbs per tree but, not to exceed 20 lbs per tree per year. Spread around the tree and water into the ground. Check with your local nursery/garden type store and they should have this fertilizer."
