The Grass Doctor

What kind of fertilizer do I need to promote new grass growth?

I have an established lawn and would just like to make it thicker and more lush. What kind of fertilizer do I need to promote a thicker lawn? What combination of chemicals? Like 10-24-24?

  1. before you add any fertilizer you need to pull a soil sample tso you will know what is needed, such as phos. or lime first
  2. you need to do 3 things norish the soil, kill the moss, and get rid of weeds and thatch build up- 10-20-10 is better for an early spring application but you need to put down a moss killer and also think about aeriating and dethatching as well.
  3. do not use dog or cat excrement, it will kill your grass.
  4. what combo of chemicals? 1 horse and 1 field of grass. MAkes great fertilizer.
  5. I would not use chemicals on my lawn for any reason, you would not be able to walk bare foot on it I would be afraid of having them absorbed into my feet and make me sick. There is a new fertilizer on the market that Home Depo has. Go Ask.
  6. Hi Mike You need nitrogen to green up your lawn. When you go to buy the fertilizer, just ask about the ratio for your particular type of lawn. Your local green house or home and garden center should be able to help you with that. It basically depends on where you live and the condition of the lawn. Removing the thatch as 'cvorse_0'…mentioned is always a good idea. In Montana where I live, it is called power raking. Just ask around and you will be able to find power-rakes for rent. Hope this helps.
