The Grass Doctor

what type of grass will work best in Marion County fl.?

Help, I live in Fort Mccoy fl. My yard is a sandyish mixture, no trees in main area where I'm trying to grow grass. I do have patchy bahai from last owners. What are my grass seed options and how do i plant it? I got bahai planted with top soil covering the bare spots. Been watering daily but still no new grass. Should I try a different type of grass?

  1. a nice green skunky sinsemilla grass would probably be excellent
  2. Hi: If I am correct, you are located in the central part of Florida, in zone eight. You can use a variety of warm weather seeds such as Bermuda, Centipede, and Zoysia. They are all good seeds to sow. Your first step if you want to do your entire lawn is to kill the old grass off with a environmentally safe grass killer. Wait a week to ensure all the roots are dead. You can til the area over and rake out the lawn. Apply your seeds and put hay over your lawn to retain the moisture. Get on a good watering schedule, and you should have a healthy lawn. If you don't want to do your entire lawn, you have the option of renting an aerator and aerate your lawn. This is a hand held machine that has a barrel with spikes around the barrel. Fill it with two thirds water and walk it around your lawn. This will put tiny holes in your lawn. This will help with seed germination. Good luck to you and I hope this has helped some. I will link you to the outdoor feature section of my website. There is a page on sod versus seed that may give you some other information. I will also link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if you can find any other information that may be useful to you. Have a great day! 3. You are in zone 9 not 8..I am in 8b which is the Florida panhandle...Bahia grass is good but make sure to get "certified Pensacola Bahia"..There are many varieties of bahia graases and the pensacola breed is developed for our sandy soil.. http://www.bahiagrass.com/info/pensacola.html http://www.outsidepride.com/catalog/Pensacola-Bahia-p-17694.html
