- some of that seed called "playground mix"...it is durable and can take just about anything. Rye seed is good too, but it seasonal and can die out in summer. Ask the hardware store. They know their stuff.
- I think the best thing to do is to plant a sun-shade mix. They usually have three seeds for sun, light shade, and heavy shade. Initially, all the seeds sprout and the grass grows, but gradually the varieties appropriate for each location takes over.
- If the shade is too deep, no grass will ever grow well. If its' more dappled shade, St augustine will do well if you're in the South. Don't know about the North.
- ~~Just go to the store theres all kinds just read the bags~~
- start out by planting rye to establish ground cover and at the same time as it dies will hold and feed. After rye established-cut very low, rack and plant creeping red centipede or equiv. water daily-straw on top helps to. stay away from any kind of fescue
- It also depends on what kind of tree it is. Some like the magnolia will allow nothing to grow well under them.
- I have an big Oak tree in my yard and I have found that St. Augustine is the best.
