The Grass Doctor

What type of grass is best for a desert environment?

When is the best type to plant and the best type for children to play on? I meant best time to plant it. Silly keyboard. :)

  1. For a desert environment, your best bet is caterpillar grass. It won't die easily in dry areas, but it soft and cushioning to people or animals who will be playing on it.
  2. Hi, In my garden for movement and texture, I employ the following. Grasses, such as Mexican feather grass (Nasella tenuissima), tawny pheasant tail grass (Anemothele lessoniana), and coppery Carex testacea, all of which partner beautifully with rocks. Compact New Zealand toetoe, an evergreen pampas grass (Cortaderia fulvida), is used for accents and corners, its fluffy silver plumes arching above deep green foliage. Here are a few upright moor grasses (Molina caerulea varieties), as well as the most upstanding maiden grasses, such as Miscanthus sinense 'Graziella' and 'Morning Light.' May I also ask you if planting in a dry garden to consider herbs and succulents. I believe this will be the type of gardening in the future given our shortage of water. May I recommend a very good site which may be of help. www.kew.org. Good luck and happy gardening. Cathorio.
