- Hey Dennis, It depends to some extent on the existing lawn and if it would be dominant. Let's assume that you need to till your existing grass under and kill it first. Get an herbacide that kills grass, spray it on your existing lawn, let it die, then till it under. There should be a waiting period of several days, but once the herbacide contacts the dirt, it should become ineffective. Till the soil, you could rake out the dead grass first. The follow the instructions for planting the Buffalo grass. Flatten the surface, rake the surface so some loose soil, put the grass down with a rotary spreader in one direction, then from another direction. Each time target 50% of the seed. Then go over the surface with a rake to put the seed under per the depth listed on the seed package. Water the new seed so as to moisten the surface deep enough to surround the new seed with water. Lawn seed generally cracks open and germinates by 14 to 21 days. Avoid walking on it as much as possible. It is most important to keep it moist during the entire germination period!
