The Grass Doctor

How can I grow grass where my dog has killed the grass with her pee?

I have re-planted grass seed where the original grass was killed in April 2008 and most of the seed has germinated and there is grass growing on the lawn now. However, there are still several patches of dirt where I have planted grass seed that no grass has grown in those areas. Why would the seed grow in some areas, but not all. What should I do differntly to grow the grass in the areas where it did not grow.?

  1. The Ph is off.....have it checked....or buy one of those cheap Ph testers at lawn & garden store. Put on whatever is needed. I might need some lime powder to neutralize the acid in the dog pee.
  2. Look at the link below. Good tips and is all about dog urine and dead grass because of it! Hope you find the helpful :)
  3. If you live in the country try to find a local farmer and ask if he will let you go into his hayloft and get some chaff. It,s all the seed from hay. Hay is just overgrown grass and is not only durable but has so many native seeds mixed with it your lawn will go bananas. I take a shovel and actually turn over the spot where the dog peed and put the chaff scattered on it and cover with a little hay to keep the seed in place. Also, a dog will constantly go where they always do thats why the grass there is dead. Put a little home made fence or some other barrier around it to keep her away from it. It really works better than any store bought seed and is twice as durable.
  4. There are pills you can give your dog so that it's urine won't kill the grass. Cheap fix is to buy couple bags of top soil, sprinkle it aroudn the bare spots, water it really well and re-seed it.
