Samples of writing?

I just got a freelance writing position at a local magazine and they want a sample of my writing to "best match you with the best possible articles." What kind of writing samples are they looking for? I've just graduated from college so I have plenty of essays. I have a few creative writing pieces I wrote about two years ago for a creative class. Would it be best for me to just write something new? And if so, what should I write about? This magazine is about our small community, dealing with events, and advertising local businesses, and contains short pieces on members of the community, new businesses, and tips on things like lawn care, recycling, and parenting. Your help is very much appreciated.
