tips on lawn care.?

  1. Scotts 4 step plan works very well in the mid-west. Takes a little effort but if you like your lawn to look green and weed free, try it.
  2. lawns are overrated. the fertilizer and weed killer leach into the water tables, the water a lawn takes to keep green is just a sin. what about planting a lot of flowers instead? I am serious. I have a butterfly garden and I get at least 9 different varieties of butterflies coming through. The plants are native to the region and once established they don't require a lot of additional upkeep.
  3. If you have an established lawn..A few tips would be to keep it mowed, set deck to setting 2 (not the lowest or you'll scalp it). Make sure you mow often, this makes the grass grow and surprisingly a strong grass growth will naturally help with weeds. I have a 5acre plot, but int he immediate area around the house, I also water as needed. When watering I attach a Miracle-Gro feeder to the hose so the sprinkler sprays it out. As lame as it may be, it works wonders. I had a few bare spots, from mole damage, where I would direct spray with a Miracle-Gro feeder bottle and the grass sprouts left spread out and covered the area. Back to mowing, make sure your blades are sharp. This ensures a clean cut and better health for the grass blades.
  4. i look after manicured turf for a living. It can be done with very little chemicals. Like the other answers, cut it regular, sharp blades, fertilise as per directions on label.Lots more points to consider but its a start.
