Best way to deter raccoons from your garden?

Have a real pesky son of a gun that has torn open fertilizer and spread it across the patio, has torn up my tomatoes and green peppers, and some flowers. Have shot at it with a pellet gun, but it just looks at me like, "yeah, whatever!" It only seems to be barely scared of me, I stomp at it, hiss and clap my hands, it just kinda turns slowly and saunters off, BUT ALWAYS RETURNS!! HELP! Is it legal to kill them? I live right next door to a forest ranger!!

1. You are trying to scare of a raccoon. You have a better chance of sleeping with the Pope. You need to trap or kill the raccoon. They are varmints and not just fuzzy friends from the forest.
2. I spent the last two summers dealing with a raccoon on my deck, in my tomatoes and eating all the birdseed. It got in our heating ducts, raised a litter of 5. I did everything I could to get rid of this animal besides shoot it. Early this spring when it came sauntering back on my deck and growled at me, I decided to eliminate the problem. I checked and they are not protected. Problem solved with a 22 rifle.
3. You could rent one of my Huskies and tie it on your deck. Won't come on deck any more. Try calling an animal control officer in your area and if you can't shoot it, maybe they can trap it and transfer it to----hm mabe Alaska??? make sure you remove any food and rubbish where it can get to it. You can also try rat poison. Be careful they can transmit rabbies. Good luck
4. Just go ask the forest ranger for his help. Ask him to eliminate it for you. He will probably shoot it. He might live trap it and relocate it.
