What are the effects of the fertilizer on tomato plants?

1. If you use HOT fertilizer (meaning it is fresh waste and hasn't had time to break down), it will burn and kill the plant. If you use decomposed fertilizer, the tomato plant will grow like mad! Many years ago I read an article in the newpaper about how tomatoes are grown in Japan. They took a piece of chicken wire and tied the ends together to form a roll. Placing one end of the roll on the ground - so it was open on the top - they placed inside the roll, a layer of potting soil, a layer of peat moss and a layer of fertilizer. They then planted 4 tomato plants on the outside of the chicken wire. They watered the plants and across the top of the chicken wire area. The plants grew like mad and produced up to 200 pounds of tomatoes across the 4 plants.
2. That depends on a proper match of fertilizer to the plant and soil chemistry and then to dosage and watering.
