The Grass Doctor

In which order and what time should I appy the following to my lawn? Fertilizer, grass seeds, and Weed control

I live in Michigan and it's sunny and warm now, so I would like to work on my lawn. How should I start taking care of my lawn and have a nice grass growing without weeds and bare spots?

  1. you should do weed controll first this way you have like a protection shield before you lay the delicate seed. then grass seed after a couple of hours then fertilizer right after
  2. Seed and Fertilize now, weed control in about a month. Spot treat for any early weeds. Don't do weed control and then a couple hours later put down seed as someone mentioned above, unless your goal is to waste seed.
  3. Since you have a lawn already it may be a good idea to weed and feed at the same time. This way you kill your weeds off and fertilize the real grass/lawn areas of your yard. After a week or two when the weeds die out you will see the areas that need to be seeded the most. Then drop your seeds down and some top soil over the top. Water your lawn with the a miracle grow watering system to give the seeds a little boost to get started. Water regularly for about month. Also before you seed you should mow the lawn because you need to allow the seeds to get established and grow to about 3-4 inches before you mow again. Hope this was helpful.
  4. FERTILIZE NOW.USE ONE THAT HAS A PER- EMERGENT HERBICIDE WITH IT.OVER SEEDING IS A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY ( MY OPINION)UNLESS YOU HAVE LARGE DEAD AREAS. A GOOD LAWN WILL FILL ITSELF IN, IN SHORT ORDER.(AREAS 6" OR LESS)IF YOU DO SEED ,DON'T USE PER-EMERGENT ON THOSE AREAS. IT'S SOLE MISSION IS TO KILL SEED BEFORE IT CAN GROW. INCLUDING GRASS SEED.APPLY WEED KILLER WHEN WEEDS ARE IN AN ACTIVELY GROWING STATE. JWOLFY
  5. plant grass seed in cooler temps, spring or fall.. cover with some kind of mulch, straw or mulch available commercially for grass seed... keep watered... apply a "starter" fertilizer when planting.. the fertilizer must not be a "weed and feed", just fertilizer labeled for grass seed starter... the times to apply fertilizer: now for established turf use a pre-emerge crabgrass with fertilizer and for new grass, as above...then, about june-july apply a broadleaf weed killer, your best bet.. a liquid weed control applied by a local lawn care company....don't apply fertilizers during hot weather, your turf is not growing and it will burn... apply another round of fertilizer during fall...
  6. I would spray your yard for weeds with a good weed killer, then wait about a week or until you can see the weeds have died out. Water the area really well to get rid of any left over weed killer. Next, fertilize the area and wait a few days because a strong fertilizer will kill your sprouts. Then seed and lightly fertilize again. Water regularly but do it in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is no longer over head and strong (watering in daytime heat and direct sun will burn the sprouts).
