- Most crops need nitrates, which are not present in organic fertilizer.
- I always prefer organic to chemical, but sometimes you need to bite the bullet and use the chemical anyway. Organic encourages recycling which reduces the amount of waste in our landfills. Composting can be an easy and fun activity with only a little knowledge. I also know the food going into my children from the garden isn't laced with industrial byproducts. If you want to feed your grass, however, you'll probably need to just buy a big bag of Scotts and a spreader. Compost is very difficult to use in this manner.
- For smallholding or home gardening, I prefer organic since it's cheaper to make and doesn't need to be shipped in, so you save a fortune on manufacturing and transport costs. That's even without wondering about 'micronutrients' that get back into the soil, which won't happen from a pure NPK chemical fertiliser. There's a chance that good organic mix will help crops and soil viability in the long term, while chemical fertiliser takes less fertiliser per acre and gives a much quicker return in plant growth. If I wanted big flowers in a hurry I'd go for chemical, but generally I'd rather use organic because it's less trouble and less cost.
- Organic fertilizers work as well as chemicals. They don't harm the environment, they last longer, and they don't contaminate the ground water. Giving plants a shot of chemical-based nitrogen fertilizer works very fast but it is like a shot of steroids, and the plants are more susceptible to disease. You can get everything, including nitrogen from organic fertilizers. The best is composted cow manure.
- Agreed on the comments above - I use bonemeal and non peatbased organic compost or manure on the garden, but I use chemically based stuff on my lawn. I shouldnt, but I really do like a nice lawn and where we live no organic products last - bearing in mind need to get rid of moss and weeds as well as feed the grass.
- Organic. the soil is teeming with life from earthworms to a multitude of microbes. Chemical fertilizers kill off this life which is bad for plants and the tilth of the soil. Organic fertilizers feed the soil life and improve the tilth of the soil
