organic pasture fertilizer with horses?

I have a small field with pensacola bahai and argentina grass that has been growing for about 2 years without any livestock on it. I'm getting a horse soon and want to give the grass a jump start on growing before getting putting the horse on it. I'm planning on doing soil tests and then applying organic fertilizer. Has anyone ever done this and if so, did the grass do well?
