The Grass Doctor

Any one use Scotts Starter Fertilizer plus Crabgrass Preventer?

If so, please provide your reviews on this product when overseeding your lawn. I thought it was not recommended to apply a Crabgrass Preventer when applying Starter Fertilizer after seeding a old lawn. Would you recommend this product?

  1. Are you talking about "Step 1 for Seeding"? It has a starter fertilizer (more phosphorous than "regular" fertilizer), and Siduron for crabgrass, barnyard grass and foxtail. If so - I hope you have a "cool season" grass lawn. That product is not formulated for southern grasses (bermuda, zoysia, centipede, St Augustine, bahia, dichondra), as the crabgrass preventer will affect them. Good for fescue, ryegrass and kentucky bluegrasses. If it's a different product, let me know. But that product is made for seeding or overseeding the northern lawn grasses I mentioned. What you DON'T want to apply to a recently seeded lawn (or one that you're planning to seed in the next several months) is pre-emergents containing Pendimethalin. That is a chemical that prevents seeds from developing. It would affect your grass seed as well as the weed seeds you're trying to target. So - look at the active ingredient. If it's Siduron, you're good to go. If it's Pendimethalin, don't use it if you're seeding.
