The Grass Doctor

Can anyone recommend some best quality grass seeds?

We had our garden returfed last summer. It was lovely. We didn't looked after it during winter. And now I think it needs some more seeds to patch the corners. Can someone tell me when will be the best time/month for seeding? And any idea about which brand of seed is good quality? I have little knowledge about gardening, so any suggestion will be welcomed. Thank you.

  1. There's some stuff you can get from good garden centres called Canada Green and it is really excellent. Tells you on the packet hwo and when to do it, water it, etc. Generally I think it is recommended to seed a lawn in the spring, so March or April time.
  2. Not sure whether you live in the states if so visit... choose the right grass variety for your lawn. . suitable grass for your location and other aspects that ... ..www.lawngrasses.com Alternatively try www.rhs.org.uk if you live in the UK. Do you know a really good spring feed can do wonders for neglected lawns and any patching can be done with Johnston patch lawn...just make sure you know the type of grass you want i.e hard wearing or the show lawn. Courses for horses so to speak.
  3. All of the information you requested is site specific. Without knowledge of your location, soil type, anticipated use, shade, etc, any recommendations would be a shot in the dark, or worse, just hype to sell a product. If you are in the USA, you can talk with local nurserymen, your county extension agent, your regional NRCS agent and your neighbors to get solid insight for the best product and method of re-establishment. Good luck
  4. Call or Go to you local garden shop....they know your area of the country BEST..... They also know the best time to fertilize and lay down grass seed for your area Zone... Good luck
  5. Lolium perenne (perenial ryegrass) or other ryegrasses are the most versitile and will survive most conditions try http://www.barenbrug.co.uk/ to find a suitable grass mix
  6. Suggestion go to the local garden center or nursery and ask what type is best for your area. That is a need to know question before we can give you an accurate answer.
  7. better using turf
  8. Perennial Rye grass will grow quickly but Kentucky Bluegrass grows denser. Just don't put the KBG in the shade, its susceptible to powdery mildew. Use fine fescues in the shade. This greatly depends on the needs of the site the option I have given are for cool season lawns so they wont do very well in high temp. For cool season grasses you should seed in the late summer to early fall. Keep the seeds damp through ALL hours of the day until you see the coleoptras emerge(first blades of grass). If the seed get watered then dries out the seed will Die. Warm season grasses like St Augustine Bermuda and zoyzia must be planted in the early Summer. If you have the time look into "Endophye Enhanced Seed" it contains a chemical inside that makes it imune to SOME insect attacks.
  9. Most of the lawns in the U.S. use Kentucky Blue grass. Sprinkle it by hand on the bare areas, cover with a little dirt when the weather is in the 65-85 range, and keep wet. Grass seed will come up in 4 days if the temps are in the high 80's or a week if the temps are in the mid 70's
