The Grass Doctor

What is the best type of grass seed to use on a shaded lawn in Middle Tennessee?

We have several Hickory trees that shade our front yard. Where is the best place to find the most accurate information about growing a nice lawn? Thanks

  1. Start with rye but youcan go to the local farm agent to get any particular info.pp
  2. Hey Love The Sun, Use St. Augustine for shade areas. It is a good southern turf also known as 'Charlestown Grass'. My source of this information is the Clemson Master Gardeners course.
  3. Hello. Ontario Can calling. Use a shady grass seed mixture. Put down a thin layer of topsoil, seed, and fertilize. Keep moist untill it starts to grow.
  4. You are in a "transition" zone as far as turf varieties go. What I mean by this, is that you can grow either a "warm season" or a "cool season" grass. However, in this transition zone it is more successful to grow a cool season grass, as most warm season turf does not handle shade very well. For a cool season turf, all the "fescue" varieties (chewings, tall, creeping) do very well in shady to semi-shaded areas of the yard along with a few of the "bluegrass" varieties. Mix the two together for added vigor.
