The Grass Doctor

Can I mix grass seeds?

HELLO! Well, my landlord planted some grass seed about three weeks ago. Right now all I have is patches of grass. I live in Germany where the temperature is mild, average high of 65 and low of 40. Rains at least three days a week. I would contact my landlord to find what type of seed he used but dealing with them is too frustrating. So can I mixed the seed with something else and how can I keep the birds out my seeds?

  1. Yes.
  2. if you want a goofy looking yard, yes,, mix away. just wait a little longer for his grass to appear,, birds will eat a lot of grass seed,, if the land lord will regrass or if you do it yourself,, put out fake snakes in the yard and move them every day to help keep the birds away,,!!tie aluminum ribbons or plates on strings and hang them so the wind turns them in the sun,, the flashes will scare some birds!!!
  3. yes you can mix grass seed. But, you need to see what each kinds of grass seed does. Like some are good for well traveled areas. Some are good for shade, some for lots of heat. And then there are the pretty ones. Like Bluegrass. Just find some that are going to do well together and seed, seed, seed. It would be a good thing if you remember the exact amount of each mixture that you use. Could be that some isn't going to come up like it should in some areas..then you throw some more on there. There is nothing better than having a fresh new pretty lawn. Something you just want to take your shoes off and enjoy.
  4. yes, you can mix grass seeds, just make sure they are well mixed or you can actually have spots that are different shades of green! most of the popular grass seed you buy in a store is a mixture of several varieties of seed. make sure you overseed where the landlord already seeded to avoid the patches that look different. as far as birds are concerned, i live in the usa, so i don't know what products are available to you. many garden centers here sell a type of seed starter that actually has some starter fertilizer in it and a compound that keeps moisture in and shelters the seed from the birds. ah...its called Greenview Seed Accelerator. some people use hay or straw to cover their seed but that very frequently has weed seed in it or worse straw and hay seed!
