The Grass Doctor

What type of grass seed should i use?

I have mostly sandy soil, but some areas are kinda clayey. I have sunny spaces and shady spaces. I am planning on using 2 different types of seeds for the shady and sunny areas. I live in Oklahoma - zone 6 if that matters. We have planted grass seed before but it is really mostly dirt now and we are planning to really plant it heavily this fall and lay hay on top of it to keep it there (we live on a hill). Any suggestions of what type to use or where i can go to research what i would need?

  1. Try Bermudagrass. You can also try St. Augustine. Make sure you lay sod, not seed. It is almost impossible for a homeowner to get seed to come up properly. Make sure you have a nice level surface also. Get all the rocks and clods out of there. Water nicely before you put the sod down and about a month before you lay sod, put down some weed killer and kill everything.
  2. Pensacola Bahia Grass - very hardy and grows well in almst any conditions is drought hardy and resists erosion well too!
  3. Before you put the seed down, use a garden rake to loosen the soil. Then put some seed down, and some fertilizer on it. Do not use hay, if you are going to cover it, you will get a lot of weeds, instead, use straw, which will be much better. I have found that Kentucky Blue Grass really grows in quick and thick, in all climates. Water it lightly everyday, for 10 days. Do not cover it, until after the grass has grown in, else it might rot..good luck..
