The Grass Doctor

Weighted Averages?

A nusery sells Kentuck Blue Grass seed for $5.75 per pound and Tall Fescue seed for $4.50 per pound. The nursery sells a mixture of the two kinds of seeds for $5.25 per pound. Let "k" represent the amount of Kentucky Blue Grass seed and the nusery uses in 5 pounds of the mixture. WRITE AN EQUATION TO REPRESENT THE PROBLEM AND HOW MUCH KENTUCKY BLUE GRASS DOES THE NUSERY USE IN 5 POUNDS OF THE MIXTURE?

  1. You need to average it (5.75 and 4.50 so that it equals 5.25) , and do your own homework. p.s. 5lb is the coefficent
  2. Assuming no chagre for blending: 5 X 5.25 = K*5.75 + (5-K)(4.5) 5X5.25 = cost of 5 lbs. K*5.75 = cost of KY bluegrass 5-K = pounds fescue (5-K)(4.50) = cost of fescue.
