The Grass Doctor

why new grass not doing well?

Hi, I planted new grass from seed last fall, and it seemed to come in pretty well. (Kentucky blue grass) after the winter, it looks thatchy with very little grass remaining. I am wondering what to do to bring it back . Plant again, or what? Any green thumbers out there that can help me?

  1. What part of the country do you live in??? It will help us tell you what might be happening.
  2. thatchy? New grass? I doubt that, as thatch is a thick, nearly-impervious layer of dried grass leaves and surface roots. Where are you (nearest big city is fine), and what is the soil temperature right now? Kentucky bluegrass is a cool season grass that should be growing well in early spring in most areas.... if the daffodils are blossoming locally, it should be starting to grow. First season lawns tend to look kinda pathetic, but the "thatch" comment really has me puzzled.
