what brand of grass seed should i try for bare spots in my yard that are in shade?

i have a ton of trees in my yard. i have a bunch of bare areas of my yard that i would like to fill with anything!! looks ugly with dirt patches everywhere. whats a good brand i can try? i tried using scotts (something?) it was a seed mix at walmart. nothing grew. im ready to try something else just not sure what to buy. is it better to buy seed from plant stores or is it ok to buy from chain stores like walmart or lowes?

  2. What kind of trees do you have in your yard? Oak and pine put offf a lot of tannic acid in the ground so nothing usually grows there. If they,re maples or some other kind of hardwood go to the nearest farm and ask if you can get some chaff out of the haymow. Chaff is mostly very hearty grass seed that is native to the area and grows thick and fast. Any farmer will let you take all you want. Just scatter it over the bare area and get your mower ready. It will come in thick and hardy because it is native to the area. Any loose hay that you scrape up with the chaff, I just cover the seed with it to hold it in place.
  3. Any brand will work from any store. The trick is to use grass seeds that tolerate shade. Most stores sell specific grass seeds for shade lawns. The main ingredient will be Red Fescue.
