The Grass Doctor

Growing grass indoors?

I'm trying to grow some cat grass (wheat, barley) inside. I have never successfully grown any plant (I killed a cactus once-it didn't drown). I've had the seeds in dirt and water in a covered container for 3 days like the package said and there's no sprouting yet. I need some tips on growing this grass, please. Like I said every plant I've ever had has died a horrible death.

  3. Wonder says go to Petsmart and buy the little starter boxes of grass. The grass is already grown in ... alll you need to do is maintain it, sweetie pie. :)
  4. Like everything else these days, there is no such thing as a magic pill to help you achieve better grass. But there are some basic tips that may help you as you go the long way to building lush, healthy grass your cat will love. It is true that your grass needs water to grow, but understand that grass have shallow roots that do not grow in too deep into the soil. In fact, most grasses only require 1 – 1.5 inches of water per week, which is enough to moisten the soil to 4 – 6 inches below the surface for clay soils and 8 – 10 inches for sandy soils. For this reason, over watering your grass may cause more damage than a lack of water.
  5. Sometimes it takes about a week for kitty grass to sprout. Once it does, it all comes up at once (and it's really hard to do it wrong). It takes a few weeks to mature enough to give it to the cat. Just keep it moist and in a sunny location until you're ready to give it to the cat (blades about 4 inches long). Once the cat starts in on it, just leave it where your cat can get to it. Don't worry about keeping it in a sunny location anymore. It won't continue to much grow, anyway. One thing you can do is have multiple pots going at the same time. Every two weeks, plant another pot of grass. Then you'll have a constant supply of fresh kitty grass.
  6. ...to continue on from Wonder's Cat's advice, or just keep replacing it. I haven't had any problem growing my own. I use a large pot - say about 7" across and 7" tall. I didn't bury the seeds very deep - just scooted the dirt over, tossed them in and then covered them up. I tend to water it daily. It seems to take 3-4 days before seeing any growth, so you might get something yet. I keep it in a sunny location. As it dies, I yank them out by the roots, give the dirt a shake or two, then repeat. It's all very casual - no extra care taken at all. Maybe you just got a bum packet?
  7. I kept my cat grass in the furnace room where is was warm and dark and it grew nicely. Keep it well watered, warm, and dark and you should be successful. I should specify - I kept it in the dark until it sprouted. Then I moved it to the sun. It won't last long no matter what you do, so don't feel bad when it dies.
  8. I got arrested for 'growing my own'. I'd go with RunAmok & Wonder's advice, my little chick-a-dee!
  9. Don't give up yet it takes a bit for these seeds to germinate. You should have a lush crop of cat-grass in no time(same thing happened to me ). Just trim the grass regularly (if kitty doesn't do it for you) this will help keep it healthy !!! Have fun and rest assured no green thumb is needed to grow kitty-grass!!! Good Luck !
  10. I think you will be OK. I would just make sure you have a container that takes up the water from the bottom so that you don't get too much moisture. Grass should be fairly easy to grow. It might take more than three days to germinate though.
  11. I am a plant killer too! I can only grow one kind. Cacti are not safe in my presence either! Do as Wonder said..... and get the kind that is already started....I tried to grow the cat grass too..no luck! Good luck!
  12. I'm growing cat grass. I used seed potting soil (moistened the soil thoroughly before I put lots of seed in the container, then covered it over with a thin layer of soil. During the day I put it in the window sill, because you want the soil to be warm. It came up in about four or five days. My cat likes it, but it needs sunshine I think, because it doesn't look as vigorous or as green as when it first came up. So I'm doing another two batches, but this time I'll let one stay outside for a couple hours each day to get the sun's rays and I think that'll get the chlorophyll affect better.
