Cat grass that lasts more than a week?
I was wondering if anyone had found any cat grass seeds or plants that last more than a week or two? My cats like the cat grass, but they don't chew on it enough to make it worth buying a new one every 2 weeks. Is there any cat grass species that will keep for an extended period of time? Will planting the seeds in a nutrient rich potting soil or a ceramic pot help at all? I'm also thinking about getting a cat nip plant for them but what am I supposed to do with the plant in order to make it safe for them to play with? I figured I would just pick the leaves and once they are dried out put them in the pouch of a cat nip toy, but if anyone else has other suggestions, please share :-) Thank you so much for your help!

- The problem is that both cat grass and catnip are outside plants. They need close to 14 hours of sunlight a day to be healthy and last a long time. They just don't get that indoors. So what you can do is get like 4 of those saucer things that go under potted plants to catch the water, a bag of potting soil, and a small bag of oat grass seed. Plant all 4 and leave them in a sunny spot on your deck or yard. When they've sprouted and the shoots are about 2 inches long rotate them indoors for the cat's enjoyment. I get really large saucers, so my cat can roll around on it. She absolutely loves it. She eats it, she plays with it for about a week, then I take that one out and bring another one in. They last a while, and when they start to look a little yellow, sprinkle more seed on them. It's not expensive to get started, and even cheaper to maintain. Hold on, I don't know much about catnip. Well, I can't find much on growing catnip. Some sites say full sun (which I thought) others say partial shade. Anyway, the same sort of concept works. Get a few plants, deny cat access to some of them, and rotate them so that they last longer. I hope this helps.
- You're doing well if you can get cat grass to last a week or two. With my cats it only lasts 5 minutes :o)!
- I have the same problem!! My kitties love the grass so much tht they just tear it apart. I like the first sugggestion of rotating the grass however I live in a cold climate so that doesn't work year round, only in the summer months...sigh As for cat nip yes the dried leaves are a safe bet, i grow them in the summer and dry them for year round enoyment so i don't know much about having a fresh plant around. I do know that the cats love the dried leaves that i give them and many happy hours are spent at play :)
