I planted proper grass seeds in my lawn and they died a month after they grew in. Anyone know why?
I planted the right kind (sun-shade, etc.) for my lawn in the areas, and they grew in full and green. I continued to water everyday at sundown, I didn't weed and feed, I didn't mow it, but they still just died. Can someone tell me why this may have occurred and will I have to replant? What do I need to do differrent this time? Most of the areas were patches, but some areas had nothing but dirt where I planted them. The grass that grew appears to have molded or mildewed down to the dirt. Now those areas are just bald again. I checked with my local lawn and garden store and they have no idea. Please help......

- Could it be OVERWATERING? Could you have drowned them? I had some patches that did poorly the first season, but then returned with vigor the next spring - like 12 months later!! Re-sow or wait. . . It is just a lawn, and we are blessed to have greenstuff around us. Think of the people w ho hardly have enough water to drink, let alone wash or launder. We are very blessed here. <><
- Water in the early morning. The sun dries off the grass blades before the end of the day. That goes for everything else in your yard as well. Watering at night promotes lawn diseases, such as mildew and mold, because the dampness just sits on the plants all night long. You saw evidence of that and described it in your question. Good observation. Reseed and try it again.
- You gave me a clue when you said you planted shade grass...I bet that you have a tree or many trees close by..they can be on your neighbors property but the small but numerous spider roots will travel a few inches under ground and starve out any new grass. I had a neighbor with a giant elm that was at least 35 feet away and the root system was attracted by the water and fertilizer I put on it and wiped out my grass. We like the tree so we decided to put in landscaping stones and really looks neat. This was a parkway not a play area.
