The Grass Doctor

Once grass seed is sown, and there is little to no rain, how long will it be possible still to grow a lawn?

I have a large area that has been seeded and mulched. However, the wind has blown the mulch hay around and left many spots uncovered. I'm wondering if the uncovered seed will still grow, if I begin to water it now. It has been at least a month with very little rain since the lawn was seeded.

  1. Seed really needs to be kept moist to sprout. If any of it tried to sprout and then it got dry, it is unlikely that it is viable now. You should have watered several times per day after the seed was sown and gradually tapered off as the grass sprouted and grew. You may need to start over.
  2. Newly planted grass should be watered daily for two to three weeks until the grass has sprouted. After the grass begins to emerge, you gradually water it less. I would start watering it daily and if you haven't seen grass in a week or so, plant more seed. Good luck!
  3. my $$ says water the be-jeezus out of it, making sure it doesnt flood. You hope that the combination of pestsm birds, critters and WIND didnt blow your seed far, far away! your seeds will nee to stay moist, so water for short periods of time and high frequencies during daylight hours--say 5-8 minutes for each sprinkler valve 3-4 times a day...wait for a couple weeks, and you will see results. water, water, water then feed it to establish strong root systems
