Lawn from grass seed in winter?
I have a northfacing garden (shady, with v little sun, especially this time of year), our lawn has been used as a walkway for neighbours doing maintenance work and subsequently has ended up with bald and muddy patches everywhere - our house is on the market so we need to get it looking healthy quick, any tips?

- Turf is the only quick answer at this time of the year as seed is slow to germinate in cold weather.
- best tip you will get today do it the beginning of april
- Here is what worked for me: Mix 50% Rye Grass seed and 50% of a grass seed you want to grow in the spring/the kind you have already. Apply at two or three times the amount recommended on the package. Fertilize with a little Nitrogen. Everything will be beautiful in two weeks, and grow the long-term grass in the spring.
- I don't know which growing zone or climate you are in but there is a winter rye seed variety that greens up quickly and in colder weather. Or if you want to reseed with the grass you have in the healthy part of your lawn, reseed and cover with straw and a keep off the grass sign !
- winter rye grass will cover quickly will die off in summer heat so in spring you can replant with seeds or sod with no competition
- Not sure on what growing zone you are in but if you are selling now I would just lay some sod down and not even mess around with grass seed. Grass seed will actually be more work than sod and it will be harder to care for. Seed requires more frequent watering than sod. See if your neighbor will pay for it since you were helping them out.
