The Grass Doctor

Is it too early to plant grass seeds?

It's currently April 19th...we're finally getting over that crazy snow weather we've been having and only see hotter days ahead...is it still too early to plant my grass seeds? Will there be a problem if I plant them and we get snow or a freeze? FYI, I live in southern part of Quebec, Canada

  1. I planted some in Iowa as soon as I thought winter was over, they came up in about a week and are doing fine, even though it snowed again after I planted them.
  2. Howdy from Alberta. We planted our seeds last week. We got some snow today and the threat of frost is not over till the May long weekend. The majority of the seeds should be fine and we will just add some more later if needed. If you are just seeding smaller areas around the yard then i say go right ahead. You can sprinkle a bit more later if needed. If you are seeding and entire back yard then i would wait a bit longer if you were really worried. Either way it is just seed, it is cheaper than sod so it is not big deal if you just need to reseed some areas. Good luck!
  3. When in doubt, Don't! Spend your time, money, and efforts in making sure the soil is ready for the seed. Turf grrowth is dictated by the soil temperature and moisture not the air temps! You are better off doing prep. Rent a CoreAeration machine and make a few passes over your lawn when it is dry. Apply a really cheap granular 10-10-10 with minerals granular fertilizer. If you need Lime now is the time to do it (after the aeration). Follow the calender. Mother's Day weekend is the time you want to spread the seed. Your turf will be invigorated from the aeration and fert. The seed will find its way into the small aeration openings. Use the fert again a week after you topseeded. Topseed with Certified Grass Seed, not a quick grow or Contractor Grade Seed! Do the same things around October 1st. Seed at a rate of 2-3lbs/1,000 sq ft. For an added measure fertilize only six weeks after you do the seeding in October. Your lawn will not only be greener, fuller, but come out of winter ahead of all the other lawns in the area. Good Luck. You can contact me at gjgjobs@yahoo.com.
  4. MY GRANDPA USE TO THROW ON TOP OF THE SNOW.WHEN THE SNOW MELTED IT PULLED THE SEED TO THE GROUND.WHEN YOU PLANT THE SEED ITS INPORTANT TO KEEP IT MOIST IF YOU HAVE BARE SPOTS USE A PATCH MASTER OR PUT STRAW ON TOP OF SEED TO HOLD IT DOWN AND HOLD MOISTER.YOU WILL SURPRISED HOW WELL IT WORKS..GOOD LUCK....
