What is the easiest way to plant grass seed?
I remember my mother used to cover the grass seed up with newspapers for a few days and keep them soaked so the seed wouldn't blow away (it's very windy here.) Is that a good idea? I guess I'd have to put rocks on the newspapers....

- Purchase a bale of straw and lightly cover the seeds. This worked great for me in Michigan.
- An interesting solution which makes sense. It keeps the birds off too and speeds up the germination of the seeds. I like it. Why not? Or you could just sprinkle the seed down on top of some top dressing, water it in and place a few pinwheels to keep the birds away. Water daily.
- Hi: There are a couple of things you can do to ensure your seeds germinate into a healthy lawn. I recommend to my clients to rent an aerator and aerate the lawn. Most rental places carry the aerator. This machine will put tiny holes in your ground. Apply the seeds and cover your lawn with hay or straw. The hay or straw will help hold in the moisture. Make sure you get on a good watering schedule. Also make sure you have the right type of seed for your geographic location. There are warm weather and cold weather grass seed. I will link you to the outdoor feature section of my website, as there is a page on sod versus seed that may give you some more information. I will also link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if you can find any other information on other landscape projects you may be doing. Good luck to you and have a great day! Kimberly http://www.landscape-solutions-for-you.com/Outdoor.html http://www.landscape-solutions-for-you.com/Site.html
- Best bet is it make sure: 1. you have good soil, good top-soil (this nourishes the new grass once it is sprouted.) 2. spread the soil evenly over the place you want to grow the new grass, moisten it lightly. 3. tamp the soild down, just a bit so it stays in place. Don't pound it too much -keep some air in it. 4. spread your grass seed evenly over the area where you want the grass 5. tamp the grass seed lightly 6. cover with straw, or grass clippings from another part of your lawn, enough to protect the seeds from birds and critters, but not too much so that sunlight can get through. 7. water approximately 3 times per week until area of growing grass is thoroughly moist (not soaked or water logged). Thank you for this interesting question and I hope that my answer helps you grow better grass!
- We just had it done 2 weeks ago and we got this machine that puts millions of tiny holes in your yard and then put down grass seed and fertilizer. Depending on how big your yard is to whether you would need a machine or not. Don't know what the name of it is. You can ask someone at the Feed and Seed store. I never heard of just throwing them down and them growing. But I guess anything is possible. Two weeks later after putting our seed in (with alot of rain or water) we had grass grow 2 inches. Go check it out to see if it is right for you!
- The best way to plant grass seed is covering with wet and thick cloth of dark color then hid it under thin layer of river's sand for a few days . you will get good results Good luck
