Durable grass for dog areas?

I am in Zone 5 Indiana. Anyone know of a durable grass seed for my dog's areas? He has a huge kennel/ run and is also on a 50' tie out in the front. We had a major drought last summer and the grass died early. In certain areas, even no more than he is outside, he has worn off the grass in those areas. He loves being out and playing in the rain but it results in him being a muddy mess, not to mention it's ruining our lawn. Any particular grass seed more durable? Also, have any of you tried the quick grass or perfect patch grass covers? I've heard they grow quickly, which would be a fast help w/ the mud situation, but that they are only anuals. Perhaps I could do one of those and then plant a durable perinial seed too, once the grass started to grow? Any tips are appreciated.

  1. you need to add field grass which has a durable seeds in it and much stronger that ordinary grass. I put lawn grass on my new lawns and I had a large area at side of house which I SOWED OUT IN FIELD GRASS ..... I cut both but my field grass was left lying and it turned out better that the "posh" lawn seed as it had clover and other things through the seed.
  2. There are several varities of Turf Type grass that will work. I would suggest visiting a Professional Landscape Supplier. Also there is some great resources and publications from Purdue. Here is a link: http://www.agry.purdue.edu/turf/pubs/index.htm
