Question about planting grass...?
I have rototilled the entire area and am getting ready to plant seeds. Do you just put the seeds down and water the grass, or do you have to roll the grass seed first? What is the best method for getting it to grow fast? Thanks!

- You can just spread the grass seed on the soil then water. Don't water heavily as you will have the possiblilty of drowning the seed and not have it sprout.. its best to water it briefly several times a day if you can.
- Rolling it makes the resulting lawn smoother but does not make it grow faster. It might also help the seed "stay put" rather than floating into low areas and causing clumps of grass. Keep it constantly damp but don't allow water to build up into puddles for the first two weeks. Covering the seed with straw can help keep it from drying out and will also help discourage birds from eating the seed. Bert
- Grass is illegal in the USA !
- I have never rolled the seed...we always just spread it evenly. Use a light sprinkler to soak the area so that the pressure from the water doesnt wash the seeds away. Just make sure to water every day....that will make it grow as fast as it can. You could also use a grass starter fertilizer. I always recommend Scott's brand. Good luck on your new lawn....
- #1 it depends on many factors but basically the best was is to till as you have done, apply a starter fertilizer,(read directions on the bag) spread the seed evenly, lightly rake into the soil.Cover with a decent layer of wheat straw and keep the seed moist for a few weeks. The straw will keep it from washing away completely in case of heavy rains..it'll help retain the moisture and will help shelter it to a point to keep the birds from eating the seed. The seeds in the straw will grow also but no worries once it gets the summer sun and heat it will die out. Stay off the area as much as possible. Good luck
- Germination rates of grass seed are directly related to the amount of seed in direct contact with the soil. Rolling the grass seed first helps to press the seed into contact with the soil and improves gremination rates. It does not improve growth rates. Water after you have rolled, otherwise you have one big gooy mess and your seed will be stuck to the roller. You can greatly reduce germination time by pre-soaking your grass seed before it's sown. Seed that is presoaked is often allowed to germinate before sown. This method is used in situations where rapid establishment is important.
