The Grass Doctor

How can you grow grass on sandy soil and is it possible to grow my own grass in these conditions?

I Live in S. Florida and I need to grow grass for the home owners assoc. I would like to grow the grass myself and not purchase sod. Is it possible. Thanks

  1. Bermuda will grow well in this soil. You might want to till a little topsoil into the sand to give it something to eat, so to speak.
  2. Golf courses are basically sand. Then sod is laid ontop. If you got sand, you need dirt. Grass grows in dirt. Maybe cheaper to get sod.
  3. Yes. Grass will grow good on sandy soil. Sow your seed and scatter straw over it (preferably chopped) and keep it moist until the grass sprouts. Two problems with sandy soil, though. One, it will require more frequent watering, as the soil will dry out quicker, and two, it will require fertilizing a little more often, for the same reason.
  4. You'll want to add sod into your sandy soil. Can you borrow a roto-tiller? Work it in well, then put a layer of sod down over that. Bermuda grass should work.
  5. I used to live down there, they use plugs i believe. You cant grow regular grass because it can't stand the climate. You can try my method but i cant say that it will work. Purchase the correct amount of grass seed for your square footage. One 3lb bag of Quick grow to every 10lb of perennial. loosen the soil about three inches deep, apply both quick grow and perennial mixture. Till the soil with the seed to where you can hardly see it. Then apply less to top coat it. You can use starter fertilizer if you want but don't use anything else. just water three times a day and not between 11am 2pm. You should have some thing growing with in 3-5 days keep watering 3x a day until your tired of cutting twice a week. gl
  6. Buffalo grass.
