- When we first moved to our home, the lawn was horrible. We prepared the area we needed to fix, and waited until the weather man predicted a big snow. We put out the seed, covered it with straw, and let the snow cover it. In the spring, it looked great. We used a fescue seed for it.
- this is the slowest and most time consuming way to grow grass. think sod. talk to your local nurseryman.
- wet the ground and sow your grass seed and put some straw over the seed and keep it watered often and should start to grow
- The above suggestions are pretty good. You might also want to rough up the soil a little bit too. If you have a 4 wheeler drive all over the dirt where you are seeding. The knobby tire creates a perfect water bowl in the soil. you might also want to look into what species and variety of grass you wish to seed. Perrenial Ryegrass should take 4-7 days to germinate and seems to be a decent home lawn grass thats as quick as it gets. Kentucky blue grass has a better ability to fill in bare spots in your turf through Rhizomes that spread out during the plants growth. KBG does bad in the shade though if you need a shade tolerant turf look into Fine Fescues(not tall fescues). The best advise is keep the seed WET!!! And add a little Phosphorus too its a crucial element for germination. The seed uses water to swell up then pop open to send out roots. Dont soak it just keep it moist till you see grass pop up then hit it with a little 10-10-10 fertilizer. Seed in the late summer to early fall, this reduces the chances of the seed drying out and there will be less weed competition.
