How should a kid start a lawn mowing business?

What should he/she do first? How should he/she plan it all out?

Public Comments

  1. post it up at a local church and put fliers on neigborhood street signs and in some mailboxes
  2. Don't plan anything out. He's a kid. I suppose just walk him or her around the block asking the neighbors if you'd like them to have their lawn mowed for, say, $20?
  3. Just do it - it's not that complicated. Practice on your own lawn first. If you can get some equipment and have a truck (old enough to drive), great. If not you'll have to use the people's equipment and charge less. Put out soome flyers, get the word out and start!
  4. Put up advertisements in a place where a lot of people go, offer competative prices.
  5. make flyers aout there services and etc then, maybe walk with child door to door then... see if anyone calls. * and also amke sure ur lawn always looks nice too
  6. When you say a "kid" how old are we talking?? There best bet is to go door to door (provided they are old enough and the neighbourhood is fairly safe) and ask if they can cut their lawn for them. You will need to have a price set in mind depending on the yard size, for an average smaller yard $20 is usually reasonable.
  7. Get a small business license, a lawnmower or two, print up some T-shirts, and go door to door with flyers. That is what I did when I was 15. Provided me with all my summer cash til I got out of high school.
  8. First off, since I own a mowing company, I'll tell you this. Lawn mowing can be extremely dangerous, even with just a push mower. Mowers are not made to be used by children. That aside, if the kid is old enough, (say 16?) Start with checking to see who would hire them. Ask the neighbors, would they pay the kid to mow their lawn? Is the kid responsible enough to do the job he wants to be paid for? Is he responsible enough to "go to work" every Saturday, even when he doesn't feel like it, or there's something way more fun to do?
  9. print up a bunch of flyers and circulate them in your neighbourhood. Deliver them yourself and talk to as many potential customers as you can. Start with your closest neighbours and people you know. You could also put an ad in your local newspaper and maybe the supermarket. Once you get a couple of regulars word will spread fast. Good luck with your business!
  10. if your in the states or Canada, u can start advertising on the free web-based ad site -> www.kijiji.com and 2nd step is money, u need some money because you have to buy all the equipment, eg: car, ( i would go for a truck because in the summer u can cut grass but what about winter..... ahh you can be a snow plower, so that's not bad..same thing wit the snow plow..save up money and buy a good truck . So get all the stuff you need, and buy more then 1 thing and hire ppl. Also go to TD.. i heard their business plans are good - they give you a big loan for very little intrest.. GOOD LUCK
  11. decide your name , price ,if you will have helpers how much you will have to spend on gas ,ect. advertise and go for it
  12. A kid has to knock on any door and when it opens s/he has to say, "I'm the only kid in the neighborhood who can clean your lawn in 2 minutes. So get the money ready because my engines are now HOT HOT HOT HOT" The s/he has to zoom to the lawn, clean it up and if the owner has not kept the money ready in that time, s/he gags the owner and cleans the house Get it? Cleans the house? :) he he he he he he he he he he
  13. in the beginning you should not worry about buying any equipment, just go around your neighbor hood and check out if they need help in mowing their lawn.every one must have a lawnmower so use theirs with very carefully and charge less,in the beginning, have, a lot of practice, and save the money you earn.and slowly increase the business by charging more when you are using your lawnmower and gas.i pay my neighbor's kids,$12 to mowe my yard.because the kids do not clean the yard as a professional does so lower price will give you more business and when you establish yourself and get mature enough to have your own truck, your mowing equipments then still you have to make a habit of charging less than the other person will charge for the same job,so people will give you chance to do their yard.if professional charges $20 and you ask for $15 then you will have more happy customer.it is really a very good business,to start with nothing and have so much in few years.and you do not have to pay any taxes on it if you do not want to show your income.but it is always good to show income at least what the earning credits require for the future social security benefits, that every one must have 40 credits to qualify for god forbid any disability in early life. good luck.
