What are alternative sources for lawn fertilization chemicals?

Pet safe, child safe, earth safe. I would like to find new methods of controling weeds and fertilizing our lawn.

1. Simpliest and safest----Compost---just rake a layer(1-2 inches) of compost over established lawn. A strong lawn is the best defense again pests and diseases.
