The Grass Doctor

How often should I fertilize my lawn?

I just bought a new home in September and this spring we worked really hard to get a lawn going. Now the grass has grown, but it has sections that are dark green and sections that are light green. Will fertilizer help and how often do you use it?

  1. Yes, depending what part of the country you live in determines how often and what type of fertilizer you should apply. I live in Ohio, two times a year, Spring and Fall works perfect for me.
  2. I never. I let nature help it. I sow Winter Rye in the fall to have a green lawn in the winter.Rye grabs Nitrogen out of the air and puts it in the ground. When Spring comes and the Rye dies the Grass has plenty of nitrogen for the summer.50lbs. of Rye is about $10. Compared to 100s with fertilizer.
