- It's better to use a spreader to get an even spread, doing it by hand isn't recommended, there are also hand held spreaders for about 10 bucks, you can use those too if you have a small lawn
- You can do it by hand but it will now spread even and therefore your grass wont be. You will have nice full clumps and some thinner ones. You can always take a cup a plastic container, small box and put holes in it. Pushing them from the inside out not out to in. And then skake your container back and forth releasing the seeds food etc... Good luck!
- Larry, look at the back of the bag of Scott's. Do you see a setting for hand spreading? Do you see various settings for say the Scott's Drop and Cyclone Speader? Trying to spread any agent, seed, fertilizer, weed killer, by hand is an attempt at turf suicide. I recently pointed out to another listing that the spreader is invaluable as a tool. Use them for the application of pest control, fertilizer, seed, weed control, and even de-icing compounds. Maintained properly they last for years! $30 today over a six year period - do the math. It can save you time and money by applying the exact amount of seed or chemical vs random application. Top seed with a Certified Grass Seed Mixture. Do NOT EVER USE A CONTRACTOR GRADE BLEND. This is nothing but weeds. The Cert Seed cost more but with no weeds saves you money. Most blends call for an application of 2-3 lbs./1,000 sq foot. The bag info should tell you what setting to use to achieve this! Seed now and then in mid fall. The following year you can reduce the rate to the lowest (2lb) in the Spring and Fall. The spreader, in the long run, saves money. In review, it is multi-pupose, provides equal dispersal, usable in all seasons (de-ice), and saves money. The spreader is to a lawn what a lawn mower is! It is a necessity! Spread by hand is like using a hammer to unclog a drain. It does not work. Good Luck. You can contact me at gjgjobs@yahoo.com. I would be happy to set-up a program where your new spreader makes you life easier and your turf better.
